How to make a difference?

Brushing the teeth is the first routine everyone follows after getting up from the sleep. Dentists always emphasise on the importance of correct and daily regular brushing your teeth.

But our ancestors also aware of the fact and they too have developed the ritual for dental care.

Especially spiritually and philosophically advanced country like India was aware of the fact that morning rituals and cleansing procedures are way too important than other things like external rituals of prayers.

They believed that the cleaning the body is itself a part and start of the daily regimens.

Indian scriptures of medicines have references of this cleaning process. They too have the same point of view like today’s modern dentists.
Keeping ones teeth clean and healthy is a route of healthy and blissful life.

We enjoy eating, talking and drinking. These three activities keep our dopamine secretion flowing and keeping our senses happy.
But have you ever gone through the dental pain? Tooth decaying and dental caries is the most commonly found dental disease nowadays.

The abnormal eating habits and not cleaning the teeth properly is the root cause of these dental diseases.
Merely brushing is not the solution. Several toothpastes can also be harmful for the health of our teeth and the denture.

These chemicals are corrosive and can also lead to secondary growth of the germs. This often result in tooth decay, dental pain bad breath and then one has to go through really painful procedures like root canal and removal of the decayed tooth.

Post operative side effects are very high including the facial paralysis or damage to the delicate nerves of the respected region. The effect can also felt on the eye sight.

Sometimes these are time and money consuming processes.
So every doctor and dentist suggests you to keep your teeth healthy by adapting the healthy lifestyle routines.

Prevention is always better than cure.

But what about the side effects of hidden chemicals we consume everyday through our food?
What about the toothpastes which contains so called chemicals in it?

The answer is very simple. The answer is nature cures.

Yes using natural ways to clean your teeth and adopting a healthy natural lifestyle is very necessary.

Ancient man knew this secret. What was the secret? The cave man use to eat raw meat and raw herbs. Even in the era of stone age-iron age and the later eras men were healthy and immune to dental diseases.

People used to have a stronger denture and rarely had any consequences regarding the ageing of the teeth.

Because, in the old times man used to live close to the Mother Nature having a balance and harmony with it.

Nature and animal kingdom helped mankind through their hidden hints. Men followed those tips and enjoyed a healthy life without any side effects. That was the reason man has survived in difficult times without much progress in medicine or drugs in ancient times.

But he was wise and more enthusiastic about his health. He was grateful to the resources he had been provided by mother nature. He never had taken those things and his health for granted.

Today we are imitating each other & recklessly following the culture of consumerism. It has been producing a negative impact on health of the mankind.

We are not aware about it.

We need to do self inspection and retrospection if we seriously want to change the situation.

We must start from ourselves and then we surely can be able to set an example of change in the society.

Cleaning the mouth

Cleaning the oral cavity is an important component of hygiene in Ayurveda, and involves cleaning the teeth (dantadhavana), the tongue (jihva nirlekhana) and the use of gargles.

The teeth are cleaned with bitter, astringent and pungent tasting herbs, which traditionally took the form of twigs that were chewed, and then the frayed end used to gently brush the teeth.

Today such chewing sticks are used by many people in  the world instead of the abrasive plastic bristles of a modern toothbrush and saccharin-sweet toothpastes.

It is stated that brushing the teeth specifically with bitter, astringent and pungent tasting herbs helps to cleanse the accumulation of kapha (mucous) from the upper digestive tract and stimulate Agni (Metabolic fire).

Typical herbs used in India to clean the mouth include the chewed twigs of Pippala (Ficus religiosa), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) and KaraƱja (Pongamia pinnata).

Western equivalents such as Barberry root (Berberis vulgaris), Bayberry bark (Myrica cerifera), Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum americanum) and Oak bark (Quercus spp.) can also be used, ground into a very fine powder and gently massaged into the teeth and gums as a dentifrice.

Herbs may also be chosen, however, for their utility to treat such diseases (e.g. by using vatahara herbs such as Yastimadhu root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and Bala root (Sida cordifolia) in trigeminal neuralgia).

These all herbs are helpful in killing the tooth germs which are harmful for the dental health. These herbs contain the alkaloids which are active ingredients of them with specific property.

One can get more information regarding the properties of these plants in Indian Materia Medica.

“One commonly used technique in Ayurveda to cleanse the tongue that is now making inroads into modern oral hygiene is that of the tongue scraper.”

Usually made out of a thin strip of gold or stainless steel, tongue scrapers are used to cleanse the tongue of the mucus coating found upon arising in the morning.

While cleansing the tongue of some of the rather nasty oral bacteria that can accumulate in our mouths, Ayurvedic physicians believe that this procedure is specifically useful because it stimulates a reflex activity in the gastrointestinal tract, promoting good digestion and healthy elimination.

If one follows these techniques everyday one will be bestowed by the blessing of good health and can lead a healthy life.

These rituals are indirectly can increase one’s lifespan too. Because everything is made up of food and mouth is the first channel and place where food gets entered in the process of metabolism.

So if you want to live till 100 years you must try this natural way of brushing your teeth.
